-Central Oregon Brown Trout! (August 23rd-24th)-

Postby hollywood on Tue Aug 25, 2009 5:02 pm

Our family wanted to do some camping so of course we picked a place where we could sneak away and do some fishing! :D :D

We chose to camp at twin lakes resort so the girls could do some swimming and leave us along for a few hours each day. The first evening we went across the street and launched a Wickiup and fished for about an hour before dark. I hooked up with a nice brown trout and fought it for a while before the hooks popped out! It looked to be over 20 inches and was a very nice brown.

The next day we went out and fished the Deschutes River for browns and had a disappointing four hours on the river. We try to plan our trips up there when the river is dropping as there is less debris in the water, well it had dropped for about a week and the was looking prime. The day we fished it they opened up the gates and the water level went up 1000 cfs while we were on the river. Even with the challenging conditions we hooked three browns and got two to the boat! Daniel landed a nice brown that was 17.6 inches long and put up a good fight! Its fun to see them come off cover and whack your lure. Earlier in the morning I hooked this beautiful big brown trout that was 20+ inches and it fought hard. Its awesome when they slam your lure and try to pull your rod out of your hands!

Early the next morning we had another chance to sneak away for about four hours and with the river rising decided to fish Wickiup next door. I ended up hooking this big brown that went 24 inches! It made some very good runs and unfortunately we decided to leave the camera in the car and didn't get the action on video but ran back and got the camera to get a few pictures before we released him. What a awesome brown and we had four other nice browns follow our lures to the boat but they didn't commit. What a sight when you see a big brown come up behind your lure and look and it, Daniel had a solid 8lb brown follow and swing around his lure before swimming OFF!

All in all it was a good trip with the family and we got to do a little fishing, not as much as we would have liked to but four hours each day was better than nothing! :D It was pretty slow fishing as we are used to hooking 10-20 browns in the river on our trips out but unfortunately not this time. I will leave you with a close up pic of the brown I caught in the river!

Daniel also hooked the biggest koke we have every hooked. It was 17 inches long and hit a jerk bait out of Wickiup! That was a fun surprise. :D In a few days I will post a short video of the weekend.

What type of lures (size, color and type) are you using and what section of the river are you on?

I thought you might ask! :D Lost of people use rapalas either the x-rap or the original, bomber long a's. You want to the rainbow color and anything over 3 inches work well. We always fish between Wickiup Reservoir and Benham falls. There is lots of good water but for the most part you need a boat. I can message you a few spots you can fish from shore if you want.

Yes. If you could send bank locations, that would be great. We will be fishing from the bank and float tubes.

Thanks,

Lee

Hey, pappy, ever targeted them on the trinity? One of the times I was there I threw out a jerkbait when the fishing was slow and hooked a nice little brown on the first cast! :D

Sure do, Though we catch a few through out the year the time to really target them is in the spring when the flows are around 2,000 and they release the smolts from the hatchery, just like someone rang the dinner bell. 8-)
