The Chrome is here

Postby THE REEL TECH on Mon Jan 12, 2009 10:57 pm

Here are some from GP this past weekend. Nice to see the fish are starting to show. Gonna be at it again next weekend. Going to get my Dad and Bro-in-Law on a fish or two I hope. All I think about is being on the river this time of year. Wishing the days were 73 hours long so you can fish every piece of water every way you want to for as long as you want to. I think we should all be able to fish 5 days and only work 2 ;) Thats my comedian buddy George on the bottom photo, tell him to smile and thats what you get!!! :D

My fish came on yarnies, George's came on eggs. He is an egg guy 100%, but he has seen the yarn outifish eggs before. He fished yarn too both days, but it aint long before the bait leader gets tied on again. Those guys sure arent jig guys yet........I had my float rod with me, but I was on their boat so it pretty much stayed dry. Those guys are side drifters. Its nice having 3 guys on board that can row a boat and put each other on a good drift. We can all take turns catching fish :D . They all know I am a die hard jig guy. I tell ya, Its hard to get the experienced old timers who arent float fisherman to want to do it when they are so successful sidedrifting. If I do get a chance to pull out the float rod, it isnt long before I hear "put the toys away and lets go fishing" :D :D :D :D Gotta love it!!. I have been so fortunate to fish with some of the best fisherman I know. Guys who have caught more steelhead than I can ever imagine in their lifetimes. The wealth of knowledge they have is well respected by me. When they speak........I listen!!! They know I catch fish on the jigs, and I catch them checking out the float rod rigging.......its just a matter of time!! My buddy Barry (Klamathsteel) knows the power of the jig!! He is another great wealth of knowledge and experience who I am very fortunate to call a friend. He will be joining us this weekend too.
When I take our boat, or I fish with other friends, we do it all. We side drift a few passes, then pull over and either get out or drop the anchor and fish jigs through likely areas. We also pull alot of plugs too.
Gonna hit it again hard this weekend too. Its still early, the best is yet to come!!

Thats really nice that you have those old timers to get out with. You really can learn alot from guys like that if you are willing to listen. We took Chads Grampa out yesterday, had a good time but no fish, I guess the weather was to nice, or maybe the water was to perfect. Chad and I's favorite coastal river has not been producing for us this year. Its been wall to wall guys every time we go out. I think because everbody is laid off, or the other rivers haven't dropped to fishable levels. Has anyone else noticed a lot of extra guys on the rivers these days?

Seems like earlier this month a small squirt of fish came through. Since then it's been DEAD. :( :?:
Fished last weekend both days with 2 of the best middle Rogue steelheaders i know. One 1/2 lber each day was it. :?
Took a couple buddies yesterday who are good fisherman and again just One 1/2 lber. Most of the fish we are targeting are bound for the Applegate so it is still a bit early. Hopefully they're on the way. I'll be on the river nearly every weekend from now till the end of April. The best is yet to come, (i hope) :? :D

i feel your pain guy's!!! its been slow up here as well. yesterday me and two of my buddies drifted the upper skykomish. about a seven mile drift. we got one fish all day. its funny how things work out sometimes. my buddy brian hooked her on a jig in some very slow water. he was belly aching pretty bad about the lack of productivity. when all of the sudden, BAM!!! fish on!!! we were one of the very few who even had a bite. everyone we talked to was saying the same thing... "nothin here..." but hey, its better than being at work!!!
