-First Winter Steelhead-

Postby hollywood on Sat Jan 02, 2010 12:49 am

We finally got to go out for some winter steelhead. Our first visit to the coast left us fishing in chocolate milk so this time it was game time. Need to get some fish on the tag before we turn them in. :D The water was low and clear which is great of course. We invited our father in law to come out and fish since he has the week off and has never steelhead fished. This morning I decided to mess around with fishing some new color jigs for some reason. The fish thought they were cool though so it worked out.

Daniel hooked a nice steelhead not to long after I did but his did not cooperate and ran him into some brush and that was the end of that. What a hot fish, it jumped two times before setting itself free. Later on Daniel hooked up again and handed the rod off to our father in law to fight this beautiful bright hen! He did a great job and it was a lot of fun watching him fight his first steelhead ever and I nice chrome winter at that.

Both fish were 28 inches and full of fight. After this next rain there should be lots of chrome in the rivers, Oh Yeah! Its the best time of the year for sure.

You know what that means..........a successful two pass maiden voyage leads to exploring many more possibilities utilizing that color......and a bigger jig box.........what is a die hard jig tier and fisherman to do....................... :D :D :D :D
Love those extremely short experimentation curves ;) ;)
Nice job!

Yea, but he had to twitch it and make it rattle for the fish to bite it, so was it the rattles or the color :o , only time will tell. :D

I would say normally that's not the best idea when jig fishing. You want as natural a presentation as possible but sometimes you have to change it up, the hole we were fishing is a little slower and with the rattles in the jig I thought I would give it a little twitch to make it make some noise. It seemed to work, only time will tell though. :D

Chartreuse is a very good color. I am very fond of it for winters. :D
Ask Reetech how many colors are in my drift fishing kit. :D :D

George makes it simple, his tackle bag is made of canvas and can fit in a good sized pocket. Though it is small, it is loaded with confidence and I made sure to take a good look at what was in it. He is very fond of chartreuse and knocks the pants off of the fish with it. You can count the number of colors in his drift kit on one finger
I did make him a jig box stuffed with Reeltech WMD's this summer, so he will start the season in good supply of the deadly MICE. Some of those jigs even have chartreuse heads on em.......He may.........just may.......have to upsize his tackle bag now :D

ya,reeltech's just a pain in the butt, isn't he. lol. he got me hooked on tying my own jigs. i have tied every color combo there is. half of them i will probably won't even try , but they sure look good and they're fun to tie. pinks, oranges and hint chartreuse are my go to colors. i like the mice's to johnny boy. in john's words "yes you do dingus" reeltech and i came up with a new color combo we call the "zombie". we have high hopes for that one. i've got names for alot of my jigs and john's. weird i know. lol
