Elk creek, PA steelhead

Postby archer on Mon Oct 19, 2009 9:34 am

My dad took his first trip out to the lake Erie area for some steelhead. The first day was slow with only one fish, but the water came up about 6 inches over night and brought with it loads of fish. He said it could have been a 20 fish day if they had decided to stay for the whole day, but they had a 4 hr drive to get home so they decided to bonk there limits and go home. Hear are a few pics.

Hey, My first post here! Just signed up yesterday and was curious about where you were from Archer, as I read in one of your posts you were originally from PA. Just now, I decided to check the net and this forum on alternative methods on curing skein when I noticed this post. Typically, I don't keep any steelies, except I am the designated provider of the steelhead for the church's annual 'wild game feast' and today's catch included the bonus skein. I prefer to use it fresh, but don't get to Erie often enough to keep the skein without curing.

Just got back from "The Elk" about 2 hours ago (9:30 PM Eastern) - conditions were extremely low and clear as it has been for weeks now with a few days exception. Minimal amount of hook-ups and very few being caught. Landed a nice 8 lb hen about 11:30 this morning. Had a couple break off, one of which was much bigger than the one I managed to catch (you know: "You shoulda' seen the one that got away!"). I pretty much stayed in my favorite hole all day because everyone I talked to passing through gave the same report no matter where they were - "Lockjaw" was the theme of the day. I'm sure there were more caught at the access/mouth, but I stay away from that area and the crowds. I could easily see about 75+ fish in the hole mostly staying put unless spooked. I figured I knew there were fish, just a matter of waiting them out. For the most part, they won. There were a few of these 5-10 minute periods when they decided they would go after a select bait, then BAM! - they turned back off. At least it was a nice day (weather wise). In the mid 50's and sunny. Plus I was at one of the places I enjoy the most - Probably THE place I enjoy most.

P.S. I'm bettin' I've seen these guys (in your picture) before at the Elk - especially the guy second from the left looks very familiar
