-Coquille River Winter Steelhead (01-08-10)

Postby hollywood on Sat Jan 09, 2010 9:38 pm

We went out and fished the Coquille River with Mike Fairchild's of Northwest Guide Service for the first time yesterday and had a blast. We started the morning off with a nice chrome bright steelhead on my line and I proceeded to play like an amateur and not check my drag (our Guides rod or reel) and had the hook pull out on a hard, long run. It was a little tighter than I like to run my drag, thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it. :D We ended up hooking two more steelhead and Daniel got a beautiful bright hatchery hen just before the river turned to mud!! Its to bad too because we were starting to find some fish. There must have been a mud slide up river from us because it went from starting to turn green to brown with crap all over the water in two seconds.

Always fun fishing a new river and we did hook fish when most of the reports were poor fishing so that was encouraging. Looking forward to going back soon!

I think the mouse would get shredded on that stretch of river that we fished. Just be sure and bring 10 or so, because that is one snag filled stretch of river. We went through over 25 hooks :o Timber, timber and more timber.

We are fishing the the Wilson this Saturday and if the water drops the Alsea on Friday, if it does not drop we will check out a few of the smaller native creeks on the coast. I am going to borrow my grandpas driftboat hopefully so we can fish the Coquille again, I know when the water is low we can do some damage on the lower drift with floats and jigs/bait!! :D
