-Amazing Tidewater Coho Fishing (9-7-09)-

Postby hollywood on Tue Sep 08, 2009 12:50 am

Our family wanted to spend the day at the ocean today since there was no school or work so we headed out around 9am and headed west. Dropped the girls off to play on the beach and headed for the boat dock in search of fishy water. I got the first rod out and before I could even get the second rod baited up we had a fish on, but only long enough for me to grab the rod out of the holder. Oh well, but we figured that would be it for the action since the fish checker said no fish had been brought in and he had not heard of many hooked. No to long later we started getting into them real good, the only problem was they were the wrong type of salmon, but still incredible and very acrobatic to say the least!

We only had about four hours on the water and ended up landing six coho and hooked 8! No enough time to weed through the Coho to find a Chinook but hopefully next time we can get into one of the big, big boys.

The bad part of the day was when Daniel was fighting that really crazy, acrobatic coho we think another salmon picked up the herring on the other rod that we only reeled in half way and swam strait under the boat. Lets just say Daniels new salmon rod is in four pieces and his herring was gone when he reeled in the mess! :( I think when we slowed down a Chinook or big Coho grabbed it and the rod had no chance, it was sitting out there just fine then all of the sudden crack, we weren't moving and the motor was off. I also almost lost my hand to a stupid seal, first it came up and tried to eat the coho right out of the net, we were trying to get the hook out and release it quickly when out of nowhere a big of seal is biting at the net. We motored all the way to the other side of the river and I let it go as soon as I could and as I was letting it go about two feet from me the seal grabs it, close enough I could have clubbed it! We also got two nice big keeper crabs. Other than that stuff it was a great day!
