Alaska!!!!

Postby archer on Mon Jul 19, 2010 9:52 am

Chad and I are headed to Alaska today. We are going to the Kenai Peninsula where we are going to meet up with my brother, dad, and nephew. We will be fishing the Kenai river for some Sockeye, the Russian river for monster bows, the Anchor river for Dolley's and hopefully Quartz creek for some really big bows. We should have lots of great pics to post in the next week and a half so keep checking back to see our latest catches. Oh, and we are also going to try to prove that you don't have to floss Sockeye, and prove that they do in fact bite, just like almost every other species of salmon :-ss Not sure how that's going to go, but we are going to give it our best shot.

i'm right behind you guy's. i have nothing to prove, so i'm flossing away. sockeye are great side entertainment. i'm up there for one thing and one thing only. trophy kings. when you go to the kenai, you're not there for the numbers. when your rod go's down and line is screaming off your reel, you just might have the next world record. 3 years ago i caught a 60. my mother in law has a 63 and a 74, so the bar has been set. good luck guy's

Looks like the King fishing is slow but we have seen a few boats run after fish but have not seen very many big ones at the processor. Lots of reds though. :D We have done some killer Dollie fishing on the Anchor and Kasilof. We will sleep in fish some reds and then do some more fishing for other species in the afternoon. Daniel caught about a 24 inch dollie the other day. We are going to a creek with large dollies and rainbows later this week and we will be able to enploy some micro jig fishing. ;) We also have about 7 gallon baggies of the RGB curing up right now along with a new killer salmon cure that we got from a friend. Good times! \M/

Yeah, I bet you would. :D We are having a ball up here. Probably 50+ red's tonight along with a coho and small Chinook. I also hooked a decent Dollie on a hybrid micro jig. Daniel's dad also hooked a big fish on the micro under a float but it went strait for the lady wading out deep. Great day on the water tomorrow we will be after some trophy rainbow trout and some more salmon. ;D

well i'm back. king fishing was really slow. i hooked 4 fish and lost them all. one was pushing 45, a baby for the kenai. the biggest disappointment was drift boat monday. no guides, no motors one take down. last time up we slaughtered them on monday. but that's fishing. rowing the kenai is exhausting. it's not technical at all, just swift. you're on the sticks hard the whole time. the red fishing was phenomenal. the first morning i hooked 30 fish in less than a hour on my 7wt fly rod. the cool thing was, when we got bored king fishing, we'd pull over to a good bank spot and catch our limit of reds (6 per person) and go back to king fishing. lots of processing and EGGS! the best part of the trip was going out halibut fishing in a 15' car topper. the two of us landed 4 halibut to 38lbs. on our salmon gear! we did better than most of the charters, and we were only 200 yds. off shore, not miles. it's always a fun trip. but being my second trip up there, i can honestly tell you, i'll take oregon over alaska for it's beauty and fishing any day. this is a great state that we live in. don't take it for granted.

barry, i'll share my "secert eggs" with you. sorry, no halibut.

I could not agree more on living in Oregon Chad. When you slow down and really look what is around us you will see we live in god's country .

I new the kenai was going to be slow. I keep in touch with Josh Terry who guides their and he has given a big :ass: to the kenai this year. Kinda scary when you think of what the river was once like. :-s

Seems everyone has forgotten how to post these days. All the sites have dried up. (-| Its another sign of the times I guess. Anyway glad your back and looking forward to the video...........

it's dan, but that's ok i've been called worse. i talked to josh just about every day, just to see were he was catching fish and what not. beaver creek and mud island seemed to be the best producers. two of the fish i lost were at mud island. beaver creeks was a mad house. you're basically using 6 to 8 ounces straight under the boat. tried to hook up with josh, didn't work out. it's amazing how many southern oregon guides work the kenai.

Speaking of RGB, I'm still trying to get all of our's from our trip to AK in jars. I need a bigger fridge to dry this stuff out. So far I've got 20 pints done, and I think I'm about half way.

you can never have enough eggs. a good friend of mine guided for his dad every summer on the kenai. put himself through dental school. anyway he says sockeye eggs were his bait of choice, even if he had king eggs. we'll see if he's right. i'm going to try them this weekend. i have a sneaky suspicion there might be some fall fish in the area.

I sure hope they work good. The berries are a little smaller than I would like, but I'm not sure that really matters. I think it's the cure more than anything that decides how well they work.

Nice, that's what I like to hear, as Kings are still my number one nemesis. Just ask Hambone how much they avoid me.

The cure and fat content in the eggs I think are the most important. They seem to have plenty of fat and I know we have a good cure!! :D I love roe!

it's actually quite funny how we all think we have the" secret cure ". it's only secret the day your catching fish. with all the cures i've made over the years, not one has out fished the other consistently. on any given day one might catch more than the other, but not very often. that my friends is called salmon fishing.

No secret cures here. ;) Ours is just not sold anymore. :D When you have six different guide boats come up to the boat you are fishing on and get eggs you know the eggs are pretty good. This fall we will be testing them out with other good cures and doing some comparisons. \M/

Good for you Greg! Don't get to confident, very good fisherman who live in Alaska know how hard it is to fish in the lower 48. :D You definitely get spoiled up there. :YMPEACE:

a salmon is a salmon is a salmon. they're not hard to catch. they either bite or they don't. the only difference between alaska and the lower 48 is numbers. when you have numbers, your odds greatly increase. why do we catch so many salmon on the upper klamath. because there is a ton of fish. (right k-steel) the reason greg and jon are doing so well is they're fishing in the salt, and they actually bite out there. that's why they call it fishing and not catching.
