New Spinning Rod - Question

Postby Beztine on Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:47 pm

I am having a new rod built. It is a Rainshadow blank 9" 8-12 lb 3/8-3/4 Med power and mod-fast action, it will be a spinning set up. Question is how many guides do you suggest? The guy building said 7 + the tip top. I was thinking 8 + tip.
I am using a Shimano Saros 3000. I will be using both Pline CX prem and Fireline at times.

What do you suggest?
Thanks
Brock

My Loomis 1141s 4-8lb 9'6" has 8 + the tip for a total of 9. You didn't say the primary use of the rod so I assume it's float fishing. If so, 9'6" is the shortest float rod length you should look for, I know it's only another 6" (that's what see said L-) ) but your rod builder can fit another guide and it will make line control
a little easier.

Get on the Batson Enterprises technical forum and they should have a suggested recipe for that blank; this includes the size, number, and placement of the guides. If not...give 'em a call.

i think the rule of thumb is a guide for every foot in length that the rod is. as far as float rod length. it all depends. are you fishing from the bank? are you fishing from a boat? is it a big river or a small river? all my float rods are 9' cant stand anything longer. but i fish out of a boat 99% of the time. i just traded toybox 2 brand new rogue ss1063's for his 2 used rogue ss904's. that makes 6-904's and i want two more. as you can see im in love with that blank.

I will take a look at the Batson site, thanks. I use to have a G Loomis 9' spinning rod and loved it till it grew legs. I found an old pic of it and it had 7 guids plus the tip.
The guy building it use to make alot of rods using the Loomis blanks and that is how he would do it. Said that was what was suggested. When he would build a 9' 6" he
would do them with 8 + the tip.

I am a Bank Maggot as my brother calls me. I rarely get a chance to fish from a boat for steelhead. The rivers I fish are med to big. This one will be primarily for drift fishing. I am still a greenhorn at the jig fishing. So I haven't done a whole lot of it but planning on doing more. I plan on having a Float Rod built also in a couple months so it is done before the summer run. I was thinking a 10' or a 10'6" for my float rod. It will be a spinning rod also.

Any suggestions on a float rod blank? I like the Rainshadow blanks. What weight - action - power? Thanks Brock
