Talked with George, the local biologist today at Green Ck. 250 steelies pushed downstream last thursday from the Whitaker trap. They should be back up around Whitaker Ck section this Thursday or so. Looks like a little bubble will happen and the rivers will rise a few inches in the next day or so. They will respond and come back to the Ck.
Hooked two today at Green Ck. on Lake Ck. The guys are giving me a hard time (in good fun) cause I'm hooking fish when they are not. Micro's rule! And 6 lb florocarbon. Green Ck trap full. They will work it tomorrow(Tues)
George said the run (steelhead) this year for both Lake Ck and Siuslaw will be on the order of 4500 total fish. Wow. I thought it would be much higher. He said we had over 22,000 coho this year! He's trying to get the Siuslaw open for coho but no luck so far. He said (and I can confirm) the shad run is basically dead on the Siuslaw. Average temp of the water has dropped 15 degrees because of the stream repair and enhancement work done over the past 20 yrs. Upper Siuslaw had temps of 90 degrees in the heat of the season. Now it stays below 75. Shad need very warm water to spawn. So there you have it. No shad but much better salmon and steelhead habitat! Good trade.
Hit my fish on orange and light salmon jigs today. Bobbers down and tight lines, Mike
