My First Steelhead!

Well, I caught my first steelhead today!

Ive been fishing hard, almost every day after school, hooked one last week and lost it, but today, first cast and BAM! Hooked into this beautiful 28" 8 pound steelhead!
Not to mention it was even a hatchery!! :YMPARTY:

Put up a dang good fight, lots of jumps and ran for a good 5 minutes before I landed him....Im hooked!

I do fish everyday! hahaha, I cant wait till it gets hot! OH and I just received the jis from you yesterday...AWESOME! Cannot wait to get a couple bobbers down.

Tried a couple holes today, a beautiful 15 inch trout that didnt want to give up fighting and another that was a little smaller.....Pink worms all the way! Unfortunately a branch liked it too....and didnt give it back

Backlash Tackle also has a good selection of jigs including one that we have not even introduced yet! Its a palmered schlappen jig with a UV Yarn tail. They are pretty cool! Good luck out there.

no!!! LOL i guess i should of said that differently. all iv been using is spoons to try to catch steelhead. wanted to get good at one technique before learning others. but i think ill start tossing those pink worms too.

I would not start with spoons to get into steelhead! Do you see any of us on here using spoons very much?

Go with a technique that catches fish easier. Spoons are deadly on steelhead in certain conditions but it takes a lot of practice to fish them well and catch steelhead. I would start with float fishing especially since you are going to be on the applegate mostly as its deadly and easy to get started with. You can float anything under your bobber too. Thanks for your advice chad! Iv tried fishing with floats before, and it was frustrating for me. I tried Spoons and it was easier for me and i actually caught one on the 11th of january. I think ill be fishing near tueville more so then on the applegate. If your down here for winters this year u should holler at me. Id like to see how u guys fish jigs in person. And id probably buy a handful of them if your brought some product with u.

I caught one today (friday) on a spoon... go figure ... lol my 3rd ever steelhead. 2nd this year. 8lb 6oz buck. caught near tueville.

Well I have to brag a little. Went back to the coast to work on my boats this past week. The weather panned out for my buddy and I to do some fishing on the Elk River. Havent caught a steelhead this year. Well we did good the last 2 days. hooked 4 and landed 2 on Wednesday little slow. Thursday we hooked 8 and landes 5. We caught a bouns too, a 15 lb Crome Chinook. never thought I would see that on March 3 in the Elk River. We only kept 3, Had to keep my first of the year . (Buck) Then kept 2 hens to get eggs. Our Biggest was around 12 but lost one we were sure was 14 or better. Had it to the boat and she decided to turn her head towards the boat and spit the hook. She was a pretty fish. Probably would have put her on the wall if I got her in fought her for about 20 min. 8 lb line 8 lb leader
