East coast West coast

Postby jcb on Sat Mar 07, 2009 4:09 am

I am new to this site so I am not sure how often this comes up, if at all.
Is there a major difference in fishing tecnniques from the East coast to the West coast for Steelhead? If so can you tell me what they are?

I know someone here can answer this better than me. For the most part the east coast steelhead are in smaller water, so small, light techniques and presentations work very well. Out here everything is bigger and the fish are too, so bigger tackle, techniques and bait are larger too, but that doesn't mean that what works out east wont work here! Steelhead are steelhead and they can be caught many different ways!!

HollyWood you pretty much summed it up. I mean there is bigger waters out here, but most of it is on the smaller side. That would also include flows as well. ............ But I will say we do get our fair share of Large SteelHead.

Most do use spinning set ups with noodle rods or long rods. Bait casters aren't the norm the flows of the water out here really do not do a Bait Caster justice.IMO. Centerpin reels and long rods seem to be taking a big hold this way. Here eggs are in a netting called egg sac`s. Jigs from 100ths up to 1/8th ounces. Big Lake trolling is just about the same as Ocean Trolling. Out here they use LeadCore and Wire with flashers or Dipsies. Rigger or planner boards. J-Plugs, Spoons. Mostly all artificial s, that would be more for Salmon. Very little Cut Bait usage. But like HollyWood said a SteelHead is a SteelHead is a SteelHead. Well that was my take on what he said. Feel free to ask any questions if this did not get you the information you needed.

ripdump, why do you think people use spawn sacks over there? Do you think good fresh cured roe would work better than spawn sacks back east?

I have only gone Salmon fishing. I am going to go Steelhead fishing In Pulaski at the end of March for the first time. I know an egg loop will be key and I am going to try the float set up I saw here on this site. I will use egg sac and maybe some bigger fly's at the end. Thanks for your help.

Great Site!

HollyWood
Your question has made me thing about where it is that egg sac`s originated from. I have made some posts in a UK fishing site that am a member, I also made postings in Canadian and here in the east coast as to where egg sac`s originated from. OR what part of the world. It just has got me thinking, but as to Skein VS Egg sac`s question, Skein is used here, but not the normal practice. When I was using eggs I used both skein and Sac`s. I would even wrap Skein in mesh and use Skein Sac`s. We have to go to waters edge completely armed and dangerous when it come to Catching The BIG TROUTS.................. If I find out the answer to my question I will surely bring it back here for the board to read.

For the last four years I have been on a just use Jigs craze.................................

Maybe next year I will use Jigs with egg Sac combo......
