Alsea hatchery vs native winter steelhead

Postby K-Dog on Thu Mar 04, 2010 4:43 pm

I saw that you guys posted a report from the Alsea the other day. I thought I heard that as the season progresses, the run of steelhead switches from mainly hatchery fish to wild fish. Is this true? If so, what would be an approximate chance of catching a hatchery fish vs. wild? 50/50 or 25/75? I plan on going out this weekend but would lilke to have some meat for the grill. I llive in Keizer and the rivers nearest to me only have wild fish this time of year. Many thanks! :ymhug:

I would say you have a 50/50 chance of getting a hatchery fish. Although, we were there last week and there were not many fish around so you may have to work to get one. Hopefully a big fresh batch of chrome showed up and it will be easy to bonk a few.

Thanks Archer!

That does not sound like too bad of a chance. I don't have a problem catching wild fish provided I can handle and release them in a responsible manner but if they were nearly all wild this time of year, I was going to save some gas and stay closer to home to fish the N. Santiam or maybe Mollala. You lower valley guys are lucky, seems like you have a few more rivers within somewhat easy driving distance. :D Thanks again and I am used to working for my fish as I am still quite the newbie at this.
